What is Asthma?
Asthma is a medical issue that affects the airways, the airways can be normal until a trigger which can cause them to tighten and narrow, thicken via inflammation and fill up with mucus. This will lead to wheezing, coughing, being short of breath and a feeling of tightness in the chest.
The triggers can be allergic or non-allergic. Allergic triggers include things like pollens, dust mites or mould, whereas non-allergic triggers are things such as infections, exercise, weather (thunderstorms, cold air, etc) or pollution (such as smoke).
Proper treatment is key in managing your asthma symptoms and quality of life, so having an up to date asthma plan organised with your doctor, including the appropriate medical treatment (such as preventer and reliever inhalers) and managing your exposure to triggers, is crucial.
On top of an up to date asthma plan, proper technique is key to correctly using your inhaler to ensure best effect.
